The list.

So I’m a big list person. I love the feeling of accomplishment of scratching a line through something on one of my lists. To-do lists, grocery lists, lists of books I want to read, movies I aim to watch, beauty products I want to try, friends I want to get in touch with, blogs I want to catch up on, personal goal lists–and the list goes on!

Listography is a book and personal web application which allows users to create and share lists.

It is proven that making lists can relieve stress and focus the mind. (That is, if you are actually getting things done on them right?!)
“Writing a to-do list helps your mind organize your actions to get the tasks done.  When you have written something down it sends a strong message to your subconscious mind which will guide your actions to achieve what you’ve got to do. Writing a to-do list greatly helps you focus on what you are doing and what you are meant to be doing.  By focusing, you achieve your tasks more easily.” (goalsnaspirations.com)

Interestingly, taking time to jot down a few goals now and then can boost you into success. Research shows that those who regularly write down their goals earn approximately 9 times as much over their lifetime as those who don’t. According to Dave Kohl, professor emeritus at Virginia Tech:

-80% of Americans say they don’t have goals.
-16% do have goals but don’t write them down.
-Less than 4% write down their goals and fewer than 1% review them on an ongoing basis.

This trusty iphone app helps to organize your lists of lists.

So Much Ado About lists…but the Mother of All lists in adoption is THE REFERRAL LIST!

It carries so much weight in the daily lives of all of us hoo are waiting. Where are you on the list? Have you moved up at all? What number are you? etc., etc…

A couple months ago now, Jamie and I decided to stop asking Terri at the agency where we were on THE LIST.  We figured it wasn’t making a difference in our timeline anyhoo. It was nice to see progress and be able to tell people when they asked, that yes “we moved up a notch!” — but when you leap from 18 to 13 in less than a month, then sit at number 3 for 3 months — it’s just all too harrowing. So we are focusing on where we sit on the list no more.

This is what Terri told us regarding the Referral List:

“I do think there is misconception regarding the list.. the list is the way I keep my information straight in knowing what age and gender the families are approved for. It all comes down to when your dossier was submitted as to who gets the referral. That is why I encourage clients to submit the their dossier as soon as possible so they can get on the list.  You could be number one but whoevers  dossier was in first would get the referral  if they fall within the age range…I know everyone wants to know their numbers but again…the numbers are basically for my info and do not necessarily reflect where you are…”

So we wait. And one day the phone will ring and we will be at the top of the world!

Thanks Rebecca I hope you hear something soon too–before we know it we’ll be sitting in Timmy’s at Christmastime again 🙂 Hopefully we will both have some news by then!
I didn’t get a chance to check out the google group until after they shut it down. It sounds like they are going to do webinars instead of the group forums now.

  • Oh, you are adopting through OWAS? We are too. Haha, small world.
